NEDERBURG LEADS THE WAY TO A WOMAN’S HEART
Nederburg’s The Red Table country-style restaurant, situated in the Paarl winery’s iconic manor house, a protected heritage monument, will be celebrating women all through August (Women’s Month), including Women’s Day on 9 August. Look no further for a delicious meal to spoil the woman in your life; be it your grandma, mom, wife, daughter, sister, girlfriend or friend! Or if you’re a woman, why not spoil yourself and the females in your life?
The restaurant has been passionately created in collaboration with well-known Cape Town foodie, Andrea Foulkes, and offers locally-sourced, fresh food in a comfortable and historic atmosphere. The accent is on tasty, simple but superb eating with flavours to match the award-winning range of Nederburg wines.
With fireplaces ablaze on chilly days, the plush and inviting interior of the manor house is the perfect setting for a relaxed, inspired meal shared with close family and friends.
The Red Table, together with Nederburg’s female winemakers; Andrea Freeborough (cellar-master), Elmarie Botes (white-wine maker) and Jamie Fredericks (assistant white-wine maker); have devised a delectable Women’s Month three-course menu to match some of Nederburg’s delicious wines.
Offered at R385 per person, the meal includes a starter of rustic seafood, matched with Nederburg The Winemasters Sauvignon Blanc 2018, or slow-roasted duck salad, with Nederburg Heritage Heroes The Beautiful Lady Gewürztraminer 2016; a main course of succulent beef fillet, artichoke gratin and mushroom sauce, with Nederburg The Winemasters Shiraz 2016, or duck breast, carrot and potato purée, broccoli, apricot and citrus jus, with Nederburg The Winemasters Carignan Grenache Rosé 2018; followed by dark chocolate fondant as dessert, served with Nederburg The Winemasters Noble Late Harvest 2017 (find recipe attached). Head over to the modern Nederburg Visitor’s Centre, a short walk away from the manor house, for a wide selection of wine tasting options. From 9 August (Women’s Day) until the end of the month, tasting room visitors will receive a complimentary glass of Nederburg The Winemasters Carignan Grenache Rosé 2018 with strawberries. This is offered not only to celebrate women, but also to highlight International Rosé Day on 14 August.
Don’t leave Nederburg without a taste of The Beautiful Lady, an aromatic Gewürztraminer that takes its name from a description of Ilse Graue, the wife of Johann Graue, a German immigrant who bought Nederburg in 1937. She brought a gracious sense of hospitality to Nederburg, planting a fine rose garden that still occupies pride of place in the garden. The wine displays nuances of rose petals and Turkish delight on the nose with alluring sweet litchi and pineapple notes. Its sweetness is more suggested than overt, enlivened by good acidity.
Nederburg’s cellar team of five, comprising three women and two men, is headed up by multi-talented Andrea Freeborough. She is trained as both a viticulturist and winemaker and combines finely-honed technique with a keen appetite for innovation as she continues the cellar’s award-winning track record. Freeborough is supported by four winemakers, who work closely under her direction. They are Samuel Viljoen, who produces the red wines, assisted by Heinrich Kulsen; and Elmarie Botes, who makes the whites, aided by Jamie Fredericks.
