Directly translated Wamakersvallei means 'Valley of the Wagons' and owes its name to the intrepid pioneers who would stop over in the little town of Wellington at the edge of the Dutch Cape Colony's frontier to check their wagons before venturing into the wild and uncharted interior.
Fortunately, these days unwieldy wagons are a thing of the past and we're in no danger of being chomped by a lion en route to our destination. Wamakersvallei Winery is only a short drive from Cape Town and well worth the visit. So, hitch up your wagon (or Toyota/ Volvo/ VW) and take a trip down Wellington way.
