The allegorical mural sculptures and mouldings which emblazon its walls were designed and executed by artist Jan Corewijn, and the huge central mural which graces the cellar's entrance pays symbolic tribute to the families that played a significant role in the history of the farm.
Inside the cellar, equipment has been deliberately kept basic, reflecting a philosophy of simplicity as opposed to excessive sophistication.
The focus is on noble cultivars only.
In keeping with its long-standing tradition of “classic elegance”, Plaisir de Merle has taken novel approach when it comes to tasting exclusive wines in an exclusive venue – an old barn dating to 1823. The Tasting Centre has a relaxed lounge atmosphere, where visitors can sample wines at their leisure, relaxed in comfy couches. Apart from the standard wine tasting, there is the Flavour Sensation tasting, designed to trigger your taste buds which pairs a bite-sized food item with a wine, bringing out the dominant flavour of each cultivar or wine tasted. Deliciously decadent is the Wine & Chocolate Tasting where unusual red cultivar wines are paired with irresistible chocolates to enhance the characteristics of the cultivar tasted.
Although there is no restaurant at Plaisir de Merle,it does serve light lunches such as Quiches and Salad, outside on the lawns or in the Tasting Room. During winter there is an option of Quiche and Salad or French Soup and Bread or both!
Weddings, functions and special events: The newly renovated 18th century manor house will be ready in the New Year catering for a variety of celebrations, promotions and functions, and is set to become one of the most popular wedding venues.
