The Bergkelder was built in 1968 into the Papegaaiberg, from which it derives its name. The cellar was the first mountain cellar in the country and was named after the annual clay pigeon shoot, held to commemorate the birthday of Governor Simon van der Stel in the late 1700s.

A highly respected name in the wine making world of South Africa, Aan de Doorns Cellar was establishe in 1955.
