Constantia Glen, the magnificently appointed wine estate on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg, has released a sumptuous Rosé that conjures up summer in a glass, available exclusively from the tasting room.
Think strawberries, salmon hues, floral scents and berry fruit, this bone dry Constantia Saddle Rosé 2011 made in the classic style of southern France, is crisp and fresh yet satisfies with a rich, juicy palate.
“This is my swimming pool wine! One part hot summer’s day, one part classy finger food and two parts affable company suits this wine best!” says Winemaker Karl Lambour who recommends drinking his new stunner at 6°C and won’t be offended if you add an ice block or two.
The Constantia Saddle Rosé is perfect for alfresco entertaining during the Cape’s long, languid summer days. Picnics from the most gastronomic with crayfish tails dotted with homemade aioli, to the more traditional boerewors rolls with tomato and onion smoor, are perfect foils for glasses of this chilled Rosé. To bring out the Masterchef in you try pairing it with baked rainbow trout, snazzy salads or simply enjoy with a classic Mediterranean platter of hummus, olives, taramasalata and crispy baguette.
Tank fermented at a low temperature to enhance the vibrant strawberry fruit and floral aromatics, the Constantia Saddle Rosé is made in the classic Provence-style with a light blush and fruity but dry palate. It is available exclusively at R50 a bottle or pay for 10 and get a case of 12 for R500 from the wine tasting centre on the farm or online from the Constantia Glen Wine Club at www.constantiaglen.com.
“We only produced 500 cases of this beauty and it’s selling fast!” warns Karl.
Besides the exceptional outstretched views, cool climate Sauvignon Blancs, distinctive Bordeaux-style reds and the sensational new Rosé, the Constantia Glen tasting room also offers a selection of fine artisanal cheeses at R45 a platter for two.
One of the jewels of the Constantia Wine Valley less than 20 minutes from the Cape Town city centre, Constantia Glen is open daily from 10h00 onwards including Saturdays and Sundays. Look out for the Constantia Glen signs towards the top of Constantia Main road. Call Tel: 021-795 5639.
