The wine of Origin term refers to the official division of the South African winelands into geographical units, regions, districts and wards. When a wine claims that it is "of origin" it refers to the fact that the vines are grown and the wine was made, in its entirety, in the district under which it is categorised ensuring that it is "original' to it's area of production. The Wine of Origin scheme is also responsible for granting wine farms "estate" status should wish to apply for it.

Below are the main wine growing regions in the Western Cape, first divided by region, districts and then wards.
