Bergkelder

Bergkelder
Western Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch

The Bergkelder was built in 1968 into the Papegaaiberg, from which it derives its name. The cellar was the first mountain cellar in the country and was named after the annual clay pigeon shoot, held to commemorate the birthday of Governor Simon van der Stel in the late 1700s.

Under perfect conditions thousands of bottles of Fleur du Cap and other fine wines from the Cape are laid down to mature in the mountain cellar. Old carved vats, which bear carvings of various famous Cape wine landmarks, add to the tranquil atmosphere. In this beautiful candle-lit cellar you'll taste a number of excellent wines and make up your mind as which wines styles you prefer.

Our Fine Wine Shop offers older vintages and larger bottles, gift packs, quality wine accessories etc - its probably one of the most beautiful and best stocked wine shops in South Africa.

Our cellar tours are professionally conducted and sizes of the tours, are strictly controlled. This means it would be preferable for you to make a reservation. Should you miss a tour, you'll still be able to taste a number of wines in our wine shop.

Blaauwklippen

Blaauwklippen Estate
Western Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch

The Winemaker can only complete what nature has started. As of 2004, we only make use of natural yeast, as grown on the vine.

This philosophy of minimal interference in the cellar is also applied to the handling of the wine, where gravity is used rather than pumps.

Wine making at Blaauwklippen is treated with respect and handled with discipline. This is because here, wine making is not a job, it's a passion and we surround ourselves with people who feel the same way. We are a proud farm - proud of our heritage, our products and our people. And we believe the pride shows in the quality of our wines.

Eikendal

Eikendal Vineyards
Western Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch

Situated in the Cape wine lands of South Africa the barrel vaulted cellar buildings of Eikendal Vineyards form a distinctive landmark on the R44 route. The farm is under ownership of the Saager family of Zurich/Switserland.

The cooling and the moistening effect of the breezes from the nearby Atlantic ocean and the excellent soil structure of the Eikendal Vineyards form ideal conditions to growing noble vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Straddling the slopes of the Helderberg mountain range, some of the Cape's finest wines are produced here. The winery is also positioned in the so called " golden triangle" of South Africa's red wine production.

Eikendal is less than 40min drive from Cape Town, or 30 min from the International Airport.

Hartenberg

Hartenberg Wine Estate
Western Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch

Hartenberg Estate's 99 hectares of vineyard comprise a total of nine different soil types and many different aspects and microclimates. This demands that site specific planting be fully researched so as to determine the suitability of the match between the respective varietal and its planting site.

Only in 2008 will all the vineyards be fully planted which means that in 15 years a total of 59 hectares of the Estate will have been replanted to varietals which thrive on their site- specific location. The ongoing planting program has focussed on past strengths and early results have shown that the new vineyards, although young, are adding an extra dimension to the Estate's wines.

The six site-specific varietals that have been planted, Sauvignon Blanc, Rhine Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are the backbone of Hartenberg's future. So as to protect the vines in years with significant heat peaks and the resulting drought conditions, all vineyards that are part of the re-planting program have drip irrigation lines. Their presence means that vine stress can be minimised as a result of judicious application of water.

Hoopenburg is one of the Cape's foremost boutique wineries, with wines having gained a widespread reputation for high quality and excellent taste. Our philosophy is simple, "we produce new age wines in an old world style". Our integrated textured wine is accessible and fruity, harvested from our immaculate vineyards.

At Hoopenburg we produce noble cultivars, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This combination together with the micro climate and elevation is ideally suited to supply premium quality wines, much sought after in Europe and the rest of the world.

Our vineyards produce all the taste and flavours and are therefore appreciated as a vital asset. Here we use the latest scientific vine management and pruning techniques to optimize the wine quality. Our wine making process compliments the grapes natural potential. All our grapes are hand picked and with whole bunch pressing, hand plunging the best juices are extracted. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks or in open casks after which the wine is aged in French oak barrels. Depending on the style our winemaker will use these factors in varying combinations to suite our market. We also select some of the finest grape parcels from around the Cape wine region, thus not limiting our vision or style.

Jordan

Jordan Winery
Western Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch

Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993. Gary's parents, Ted and Sheelagh, bought the 146 Ha Stellenbosch property in 1982, and embarked on an extensive replanting programme specialising in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. Jordan continues to focus on producing fiercely individual wines that combine the fruity accessibility of the New World with the Classic Elegance of the Old.

The Jordan philosophy is simple: Success begins in the vineyards. Exceptional wines are made possible by careful management of the farm's extensive natural assets through innovative canopy management and selecting varieties and clones specifically suited to the various soils and slopes.

Unique by Nature's Design, the Jordan slopes face North, South, East, and West, with vineyards lying at differing altitudes from 160 to 410 m above sea level. The vineyards with their close proximity to both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans benefit from coastal fog and cool breezes. A mild Mediterranean climate with a maritime influence minimizes the risk of frost damage.

The soils at Jordan have evolved from 600 million year old Cape Granite, and range from deep, well-drained clay-loam to gravelly and sandy duplex soils situated on clay.

Klawervlei

Klawervlei Wine Estate
Western Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch

Superb wines are produced from great grapes. The viticulturist at Klawervlei ensures a perfect marriage between the terroir and the vine to ensure fine fruit exclusively for the wines. Klawervlei has typical Cote D'or soils and it's almost natural to select Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Shiraz as the new cultivars to compliment the wines produced.

In September / October 2004 a terroir typical Chenin Blanc made from grapes of almost 50 years old vines will be released. This crisp and well balanced wine is best enjoyed with fish or shellfish, a country terrine or even some spiced food.

Also to be released before Christmas is the Klawervlei Merlot. A wine made from well established Merlot vineyards which produced small berries and a low yield. This gives the concentrated colour and flavour which make the winemaker proud. This wine too is very well balanced and bursts with an abundance of flavours found in ripe berries. This wine will compliment spicy venison or game birds and off course a good steak and most cheese varieties.

Opening Times

By reservation only.
