Bellingham

Bellingham Winery
Western Cape Winelands - Franschhoek

Bellingham is synonymous with the finest
wines in South Africa

With a history firmly rooted in the winelands of the Cape, the first vines were planted in the virgin soil of the beautiful Franschhoek valley more than 350 years ago. Since then, generations of Bellingham winemakers have toiled the earth, nurtured the vines and carefully crafted wines of great diversity and character.

The Bellingham tradition has always boldly pioneered new trends to stay at the cutting-edge of crafting fine wines, yet we have always remained true to the call for stylish, accessible and well-balanced wines which proudly reflect the distinctive character of each varietal and our Cape terroir.

The result is a delightfully diverse range. Exciting. Modern. Lively. Sophisticated without pretence and New World-ish with a charisma that prevails as classic earning Bellingham wines world-class status. It's no secret that the label is one of South Africa's best known wines in global markets while remaining a favourite at home.

Bellingham: Classic, Modern, Exceptional.

Cabriere Estate

Cabriere Estate
Western Cape Winelands - Franschhoek

In 1989 the new vineyards of Haute Cabriere, lying along the west-facing stoney slopes of the Franschhoek pass, were planted with the world's most demanding grape: Pinot Noir. It was time to evolve from being a Cap Classique specialist and respond to the challenge of a demanding cultivar.

The terroir was ideal; Achim's enthusiasm boundless. New Burgundian clones, selected for their rich fruit and colour, were densely plated at 10 000 vines a hectare, for a lower yield with high-quality fruit. The grapes show an intensity of flavour, captured in the first Pinot Noir vintages. These are wines that are rich and smooth. Combining intensity with elegance. Unmistakably Haute Cabriere.

Exactly 300 years after Cabriere had been granted to Pierre Jourdan, a state-of-the-art cellar was opened at Haute Cabriere, specifically to handle Pinot Noir. Through this experience of Methode Cap Classique, Achim had learned vital lessons about the fragility of a delicate cultivar. These were put into practice in the new cellar to capture terroir, unhindered by clumsy tannins.

Sunk into the Franschhoek mountainside, the underground cellar is entirely gravity-fed. Grapes are offloaded through the roof, the berries channelled into fermentation tanks. Fermented juice is collected in barrels of French oak for maturation. All without mechanical manipulation.

Colmant Cap Classique & Champaigne

Colmant Cap Classique & Champaigne
Western Cape Winelands - Franschhoek

Tucked away in the far end of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, the Colmant winery is entirely dedicated to the South African bubbly-lover.

Deciding to fulfill their passion, Jean-Philippe and Isabelle Colmant set about starting their own production of fine Cap Classique wines in 2005 and in the meantime importing some exceptional Champagne.

Our cellar was erected from scratch in 2005. According to our philosophy of hands-on quality, we designed a cellar that was both modern, small and efficient, which allows us to control the whole production cycle. The cellar has been built in a "Cape Vernacular " style which matches the existing homestead and has wrap-around views of the valley and nestles under the majestic Middagkrans peak.

Our tasting room is casual but classy, with a cosy fire place for winter days and a lovely pergola covered stoep looking up at the Middagkrans Mountain.

Dieu Donne

Dieu Donne Vineyards
Western Cape Winelands - Franschhoek

The view from Dieu Donne is well-known among those who wish to identify the famous landmarks of Franschhoek, watch the sun setting over the Simonsberg Mountains, or just love enjoying a glass of wine during a picnic at this scenic spot.

We cordially invite you to visit the Dieu Donne winery, enjoy our beautiful surroundings and taste our gifted wines.

The gift of perfect conditions

Dieu Donne is situated high on the steep southwest facing slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains. Here the sun is tempered, ensuring slow ripening of our grapes. And thanks to cool summer conditions and Dieu Donne's unique soil strata of Hutton and Clovelly from weathered granite with a rocky top soil, found only in this corner of the Valley, the vines do not show excessive vigour, nor do they over-produce. This exceptional terroir gives Dieu Donne wines their special character.

Dieu Donne grows two thirds red and one third white grapes. The cellar produces 16 500 cases per year, of which nearly half is exported to countries around the globe.

La Bourogne

La Bourgogne
Western Cape Winelands - Franschhoek

La Bourgogne is a subdivision of the farm Bourgogne which was among the first Huguenot farms proclaimed in 1694. A fine Semillon wine, PROGENY, is being matured in French oak barrels, for release in the spring of 2005.

A fine, traditional style Semillon wine - Progeny - is produced on the farm. This cultivar used to be synonymous with the Franschhoek valley and is making a comeback. Our 2005 Semillon was awarded 4 stars in the John Platter Wine guide.

Our 20 year old vines are approaching their optimum years, and we hope to maintain the quality of our product. There are plans to produce both a red and a white blend, whilst our dessert wine is resting in barrels.

La Bri Vineyards

La Bri Vineyards
Western Cape Winelands - Franschhoek

The wines of La Bri are a product of a notable mixture of noble cultivars, good soil and a Mediterranean climate. The northerly aspect of the vineyards enables the sun in the spring to generate the new growth of the wines.

In summer the South Easter wind serves to temper the heat, keeping the wines cool and healthy. Long, warm summer days allow the berries to swell with a rich sap. The cool evening mists that roll in enhance the acid content of the fruit, the key to life in a good wine.

La Bri has a subtle variety of good lands, some of it sandy, with a firm clay base - other soils are alluvial - deep and rich. There are 20 hectares of vineyard dedicated to the production of our wine grapes. Our cultivars are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Weisser Reisling, and a fine stand of Semillon, more than 90 years old. This special heritage produces a wine of remarkable character, naturally smooth, with a buttery richness.

At harvest time, work begins before dawn. He speed of mechanical harvesting allows the grapes to be taken of in perfect ripeness: full fruit and a adequate acidic content, the all important pillars of a great wine. Before the late morning sun beats down on the vineyards, the harvested grapes have reached the cellar.

Driaan van der Merwe of Franschhoek Wynkelder is the creative force in the wine making of the La Bri range. Franschhoek Wynkelder stocks the full range of La Bri wines and conduct tasting and sales in their wine center.
