Welbedacht

Welbedacht - Schalk Burger Wines
Western Cape Winelands - Wellington

Our farm Welbedacht, granted in 1830, means "well thought out" in Dutch and has been producing wine and quality grapes since those early days as a testament to its unique and well thought out positioning against the slopes of Groenberg Mountain overlooking the picturesque Cape Winelands.

Once a ramshackle cellar dating back to the 1800s. Welbedacht is now in the safe hands of former rugby Springbok Schalk Burger Snr. After selling grapes to high-profile producers with 'amazing results' for a few years (think ABSA Top 10 Pinotage), Burger decided in 2003 to follow his dream of making his own wines.

The wines start when we hand select the bunches of grapes in our vineyards and make the wine in our unique cellar, which we designed to suit our fruit.

Describing the 2005 harvest as 'a roller coaster ride of gritted teeth and silent prayer', Schalk Burger and winemaker Matthew Copeland are particularly excited about the quality of their Pinotage and barrel-fermented Chenin, both from decades-old bush vines. But look out, also for their 'very special, serious' blend named ...no, not Rugby field, but CRICKET PITCH, after the Welbedacht oval, situated alongside the beautifully restored homestead.

Wamakersvallei Winery

Wamakersvallei Winery
Western Cape Winelands - Wellington

Wamakersvallei is situated in what is surely one of the most scenic pockets of our winelands. Directly translated Wamakersvallei means 'Valley of the Wagons' and owes its name to the intrepid pioneers who would stop over in the little town of Wellington at the edge of the Dutch Cape Colony's frontier to check their wagons before venturing into the wild and uncharted interior.

Fortunately, these days unwieldy wagons are a thing of the past and we're in no danger of being chomped by a lion en route to our destination. Wamakersvallei Winery is only a short drive from Cape Town and well worth the visit. So, hitch up your wagon (or Toyota/ Volvo/ VW) and take a trip down Wellington way.

At Wamakersvallei we believe in providing the very best in wine encounters. That's why, when it comes to quality and service, we're constantly trying to elevate our tastings and sales experience to new levels of excellence.

That is why you'll discover a host of rare vintages and exciting offers when you next visit our cellar. In the run up to the summer holidays we have introduced an extremely special and unique opportunity to travel back in time, as you sample the very best of Wamakersvallei over the years. So what are you waiting for?

Napier Winery

Napier Winery
Western Cape Winelands - Wellington

Our winery is named after Sir George Napier, Governor of the Cape of Good Hope 1837 - 1843, who distinguished himself by abolishing slavery. It was he who named Wellington in honour of the famous Duke of Wellington, his erstwhile commanding officer in the wars against Napoleon.

Napier winery was established in 1989 on land farmed since the late 1600's. The farm was largely replanted with noble varietals to produce three top wines: a red blend in the style of the Medoc; a Chardonnay modelled on Meursault; and a flinty dry Chenin Blanc from indigenous old semi-bush vines.

Although based on these models, our wines are clearly from the new world and reflect the distinctive terroir of our valley. All grapes are hand picked from our own vineyards.

Mont du Toit

Mont Du Toit
Western Cape Winelands - Wellington

Mont du Toit Kelder lies at the foot of the Hawequa mountain, Wellington, Western Cape, bordering Paarl, the centre of wine production in South Africa, and some 65 kilometres north-north-east of Cape Town.

Some 26 hectares of vines grow on north and northwest facing slopes in weathered granite, and sandy loam in the lower areas. Only red varieties have been and will be planted - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvedre, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot.

Wine production at Mont du Toit is based on a traditional 'low-tech' approach. The entire Mont du Toit philosophy relies on the growing of the right grapes, keeping yields down, doing green harvesting (pruning away excessive grapes) at veriason and meticulously selecting only ripe fruit by hand during harvest.

Picnic facilities are available - Picnics need to be booked please.

Opening Times

Mon- Fri:    08h30 - 16h30

Malan de Versailles

Malan De Versailles
Western Cape Winelands - Wellington

The farm Versailles was established in 1789 by the French Huguenots. It is situated in the picturesque Wellington Valley, in the heart of the South African wine-growing area.

The Malan family has owned the farm since 1846. Tienie Malan, the present owner, and his daughter Annareen took to heart the quotation "to know where you are going, you have to know were you are coming from", and set off in the footsteps of our winemaking forefathers.

Kleinfontein

Kleinfontein
Western Cape Winelands - Wellington

The thatched farm house was built around 1830 by the descendents of the French Huguenots and was extended at the turn of the century. Tim and Caroline Holdcroft have painstakingly restored the original Cape Dutch character with poplar beams and ceilings made from reeds harvested on the farm.

Kleinfontein is a working farm cultivating vines, guavas and olives and has an organic vegetable garden irrigated by water from the crystal clear spring which gives the farm it's name "Small Spring". Caroline's indigenous bird friendly garden was opened recently for the Wellington Garden Festival and overseas visitors.

Kleinfontein produces small volumes of top quality wine with all grapes benefiting from personal attention and being hand picked at the peak of ripeness. Tim's first wine came to the market in 2004 and was a 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon which has proved to be very successful. A Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot and a straight Merlot are also produced with the latter doing very well on the overseas market.
